about swimming

Children love to play in the water, but get tired of the same games all the time. Here are a few old games that have been modified to play in a swimming pool. Remember to always supervise children when they are in or near water, no matter how good a swimmer they are.
Play a game of tag, the person who is it must catch a streamer or ribbon (not more than about 8 inches long) that is held by the other players. Once the person who is it has caught all the streamers then it becomes someone elses turn. You can make changes like specifing which hand the streamer is held in, or it must be held between the toes or a time limit if you have several children who don't swim as well as the others.

Play baseball in the pool, use a foam bat and ball, swim to designated points around the pool and score bases as if it were regular baseball. The pitcher should toss from one end of the pool to the other for the batter, and a foul ball is one that goes out of the pool.
Soccer is another team game that can be modified for the pool. Use a large beachball, and have fun, remember that you can't use your hands to touch the ball. Making a rule that there can be no dunking is a good safty idea.
Here is one that will let even the youngest swimmers have fun and help them become more proficient. An adult tells each child the name of a storybook character. After everyone has a character, they must swim to another child and as a yes or no question to help them figure out who the character is. They can only ask one question at a time, then they must ask another person a question. When they have each asked 5 questions, then they must try and guess the character. The adult can keep score.
Many childrens games can be modified to be played in a pool. Your childrens imaginations will do the rest. Enjoy the games, and have a safe swimming session.
